Buffalito Buffet

Just a reminder that I’ll be reading from my new collection, Buffalito Buffet, at the Moonstone Arts Center tonight. The time is 7:00 p.m., and the address is 108 S. 13th Street, Philadelphia.

In point of fact, I’ll be reading from the novella “Barry’s Tale,” and since I don’t have time to read all of it, I”ll be handing out postcards with links to download the entire novella in a variety of formats that cover all your basic reading devices (except, you know, eyeballs).

This is all part of the Philadelphia Fantastic Reading series, a monthly gathering that begins with a reading, followed by a stroll to a nearby restaurant and an evening meal with excellent conversation.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the reading. And also, some lucky member of the audience will leave with their very own plush buffalito!

My-Down-to-the-Wire Philcon 2012 Schedule

Year after year, it seems like Philcon’s destiny to be constantly besieged. Fortunately, they have some very good people who give of themselves tirelessly (even when people like me bitch and moan).

While I will be at the convention on Friday, I don’t have any programming. In fact, for reasons that are known only to the scheduling gods, I am not on any panels at all this year. That said, I will be doing both a signing and a reading. But my main focus will be a launch party for The Wizard of Macatwa And Other Stories by Tom Doyle, the newest book from my small press, Paper Golem. We’ll have copies of the book available for purchase, and anyone who buys one at the launch party will also get the ebook version at no extra cost.

Saturday, November 10th:
10:00 – 11:00am (Autograph Table) Signing
The prefect time to sign books, when I’m barely awake after too little sleep from the previous evening’s parties. Come on by!

12:00 – 1:00pm (Executive Suite 623) Reading
It appears I have an entire hour to use, so I’ll probably read my novella, “Barry’s Tale,” from my new book, Buffalito Buffet, which comes out the following Friday. Oh yeah, and everyone gets a free copy of the novella!

3:00 – 6:00pm (Executive Suite 823) Paper Golem Book Launch: The Wizard of Macatwa
Award-winning author Tom Doyle will be there to read several stories. Tom’s presentation is intense! Join us and help celebrate the release of his first book.

So that’s where you’ll find me. Barry will be with me, riding my shoulder as is his wont. Be sure to ask for a photo with him, as his Facebook page is getting stale.

Buffalito Buffet

I have the pleasure once again of being the featured author at this month’s Philadelphia Fantastic Reading series, taking place for the penultimate time at the Moonstone Arts Center, 108 S. 13th Street, Phila., Pa, conveniently located in Center City Philadelphia

I’ll be reading from Buffalito Buffet, my new collection of stories from the Amazing Conroy series, which includes the original novella “Barry’s Tale,” as well as “Buffalo Dogs” — the very first story in the series, and several that are now out of print. Conroy is a stage hypnotist, turned smuggler, turned corporate CEO. He can usually be found in the company of Reggie, his alien animal companion that resembles a miniature bison, but can eat anything and farts oxygen.

All attendees will receive a free copy of the electronic version of the novella “Barry’s Tale,” and some lucky member of the audience will leave with their very own plush buffalito! Wow!

!!! The reading will not be in Klingon !!! (probably)

My-Almost-Certainly-Final Capclave 2012 Schedule

I’ve had this information for a few days now, but I’ve been letting it sit and settle (and dry and bake and gel) in case there were any surprise changes. There haven’t been, so I’m feeling fairly confident that this is will be my schedule for Capclave next month.

Friday, October 12th:
4:00 – 4:55 (Rockville/Potomac) Comic Relief
How much comic relief can you put in a book before it gets shifted into the humor category? Does humor hurt or enhance a serious novel? Does it throw you out of the story if you expect Song of Ice and Fire and get a line right out of Xanth? What are examples of writers who get it right/wrong?
Doug Fratz, Larry Hodges, James Maxey (M)

5:00 – 5:25 (Readings Room) Reading
In an act of tempting fate, I’ll probably read something from a Conroy story. It’s also likely that I’ll be giving away a plush buffalito to someone who shows up. Yeah, shameless.

9:00 – 9:95 (Readings Room) Paper Golem Book Launch: Cucurbital 3
Nine Authors, Three Prompts, One Anthology! Drop by and help celebrate the audacity of the small press!

Saturday, October 13tht
10:00 – 10:55 (Salons A & B) As you will (M)
Anything goes? A panel without preconception or plan. Panelists talk about anything and everything.
Inge Heyer, Bud Sparhawk

5:00 – 5:55 (Rockville/Potomac) FTL what the hell (M)
Space the final frontier, how do you get characters there? Does the feasability of the described propulsion make or break a story?
John Ashmead, John G. Hemry, Yoji Kondo (Eric Kotani), Bud Sparhawk

7:30 – 8:25 (Salons A & B) Mass Signing
This is the mass signing held before the presentation of the WSFA Small Press Award.
Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Eric Choi, Brenda Clough, David Louis Edelman, Andrew Fox, Ron Garner, Morgan Keyes, Dave Klecha, Jonah Knight, Yoji Kondo (Eric Kotani), Dina Leacock, Edward M. Lerner, Craig Alan Loewen, James Maxey, Mike McPhail, James Morrow, Diana Peterfreund, Darrell Schweitzer, Alan Smale, Bud Sparhawk, Jean Marie Ward, Lawrence Watt-Evans

8:30 – 10:25 (Salons A & B) Small Press Awards
My Amazing Conroy story, “Yesterday’s Taste,” has been nominated. Competition is very stiff, and I’ve been practicing my “it’s an honor just to have been nominated” speech. Pretty easy, because it’s true.

All in all a pretty full weekend. And of course, Barry will be there too, eager to meet people and garner a few more photos for his Facebook page.

This coming Saturday, September 22nd, I’ll be one of the speakers at Sci Fi Day. The annual event is organized by a local group, the members of the USS Susquehannock, and takes place at the Olde Town Books and Brew in Mechanicsburg, PA.

An assortment of guests will be on hand, each taking a turn to speak to the assembled masses. Stories will be told, books will be sold, autographs will be obtained.

In addition to myself the participants include: Michael Jan Friedman, Phil Giunta, Darrell Schweitzer, Jay Ansky, Beryl the Catian, the Capital City Jedi Knights, Doc the Klingon, the folks behind Fortress Publications, and MJ Rogers.

The event starts at 2pm (though you can show up earlier to schmooze) and runs until 9pm when the shop closes up. So, all in all, a fun-filled day in Mechanicsburg. You should come on by!

My-Very-Early-And-Likely-To-Change Capclave 2012 Schedule

Capclave is just around the corner (if you can handle the metaphor of laying out the calendar like a road map) and I’ve just received the first in what will likely be a series of schedules. Still, it’s looking quite interesting, and I’m very fond of this convention because the programming is always fine and the people who attend are just a delight.

Friday, October 12th:
4:00 – 4:55 (Rockville/Potomac) Comic Relief

Doug Fratz, Larry Hodges, James Maxey (M)

5:00 – 5:25 (Readings Room) Reading
I’m not certain what I’ll be reading yet, but it’s pretty likely that I’ll be giving away a plush buffalito to someone who shows up. So, you know, show up!

Saturday, October 13tht
9:00 – 9:55 (Salons A & B) As you will (M)
Anything goes? A panel without preconception or plan. Panelists talk about anything and everything.
Inge Heyer, Bud Sparhawk, Ian Randal Strock

5:00 – 5:55 (Rockville/Potomac) FTL what the hell (M)
Space the final frontier, how do you get characters there? Does the feasability of the described propulsion make or break a story?
John Ashmead, John G. Hemry, Yoji Kondo (Eric Kotani), Bud Sparhawk

It’s not clear yet when it will happen, but somewhere in the midst of this convention weekend there should be a small launch party for Cucurbital 3, the latest anthology from Paper Golem. I’m even expecting some of the authors to be there, so you’ll be able to get your copies signed!

And that’s the current state of my schedule. Changes will be posted as they occur.

Monday, September 3rd
10:00 – noon (Sandburg) Writers’ Workshop -Section U
4:01 – next several days (offsite) Recovery Time – Enjoying the City of my Birth!

And again, I won’t be attending the SFWA Business Meeting because I’m running the Codex Breakfast which is at the same time.

Since I’ll be giving away copies of my new Amazing Conroy novella, “Barry’s Tale,” I decided that I should do something totally different during my read. Barry himself will still be present, and some lucky attendee will get a free buffalito plushie just for showing up, but I’m going to read from my recently published story “Coca Xocalatl” in the new ReDeus shared world anthology. Because, who doesn’t want to come and hear me mangle the names of half a dozen ancient Aztec gods?

Looking forward to seeing all of you (and yes, especially you!) in Chicago.

This is probably my final schedule for Chicon. Of course, the moment I post this I’m jinxing myself and doubtless there’ll be a change, but you know what I mean.

Wednesday, August 29th:
noon – 11:00 (Addams) Klingon Language for Newbies

Thursday, August 30th:
3:00 – 4:30 (Kaffeeklatsche 1) Kaffeeklatsche
4:30 – 6:00 (Autograph Tables) Autographing

Friday, August 31st
9:00 – 10:30 (Offsite ) Strolling with the Stars
noon – 1:30 (Grand Suite 3) Iron Chef: Flash Fiction (M)
1:30 – 3:00 (Wright ) “To Be” or Not “To Be”: Constructed Languages in SF&F
3:00 – 3:30 (Fan Lounge) Writer Under Glass #23
4:00 – 4:30 (Addams ) Reading

Saturday, September 1st
09:00 – 10:30 (Offsite ) Codex Breakfast
1:30 – 3:00 (Wrigley) How to Speak Klingon

Sunday, September 2nd
9:00 – 10:30 (Offsite) Strolling with the Stars
8:00 – 11:00 (Grand Ballroom) Hugo Awards

Monday, September 3rd
10:00 – noon (Sandburg) Writers’ Workshop -Section U
4:01 – next several days (offsite) Recovery Time – Enjoying the City of my Birth!

I won’t be attending the SFWA Business Meeting because someone decided to schedule it opposite the Codex Breakfast (which has been set since early June), and since I’m the fellow who organizes that breakfast, I’m going to be there! At some point though, I’ll be working the SFWA table in the dealers’ room, and possibly even pretending to sign autographs there.

What hasn’t changed from my last schedule draft is my plan to wander the convention with my faithful plush promotional device, Barry, riding on my shoulder. I’ll be handing out postcards for free copies of his eponymous novella “Barry’s Tale” and even giving away similar plushies to some members of the audience at my reading, Kaffeeklatsch, and Autographing session (and maybe elsewhere too so come up to me when I’m strolling, you might get lucky!). Also be sure to ask for a photo with Barry at any time during the convention. He has his own Facebook and Google+ pages, and he needs images to post.
