2012 Worldcon Schedule (a first look)

One of the ways to predict the quality of a convention is by how far in advance they send out preliminary schedules to their participants. Chicon 7 sent me mine today, four full weeks before the start of the convention.

I have no doubt there’ll be some changes. Some of my co-panelists will slip away and others will show up in their stead, rooms may change, and times surely will, but all in all, having a glimpse of what I can expect this far in advance is a clear sign that this worldcon is going to be awesome!

Wednesday, August 29th:
noon – 11:00 Klingon Language for Newbies

Thursday, August 30th:
9:00 – 10:00 Strolling with the Stars
3:00 – 4:30 Kaffeeklatsche
4:30 – 6:00 Autographing

Friday, August 31st
noon – 1:30 Iron Chef: Flash Fiction (M)
3:00 – 3:30 Writer Under Glass #23
4:00 – 4:30 Reading

Saturday, September 1st
09:00 – 10:30 Codex Breakfast
10:30 – noon Another View on Character Building
1:30 – 3:00 How to Speak Klingon

Sunday, September 2nd
9:00 – 10:00 Strolling with the Stars
noon – 1:30 Introduction to Linguistics
8:00 – 11:00 Hugo Awards

Monday, September 3rd
10:00 – noon Writers’ Workshop -Section U
4:01 – next several days Recovery Time – Enjoying the City of my Birth!

The actual schedule for Strolling with the Stars hasn’t gone out yet, but I’ve included my best guess above. Likewise, the day and time of the SFWA Meeting has yet to be announced, but if I had to guess I’d say it will happen just after lunch on Sunday. Stay tuned to see if I’m right, because if I am I’ll either have to miss it, or the Linguistics panel will end up moved to a different time.

As always, you can expect to see my faithful plush promotional device, Barry, riding on my shoulder during the convention. But this year, Barry is not alone. I’ll give one away to some lucky Buffalito Wrangler who comes to my reading, another at my Kaffeeklatsch, and at least one more to someone who comes to my Autographing session with three or more books for me to sign (yes, I know, I’m shameless, but you also know you want a plush buffalo dog of your very own, complete with a tiny blue tongue!). Also be sure to ask for a photo with Barry at any time during the convention. He has his own Facebook and Google+ pages, and he needs images to post.

Nebula Awards Weekend 2012

Nebula Awards Weekend

Coming up on Thursday is the start of this year’s Nebula Awards Weekend. I expect to be kept pretty busy with an action packed few days complete with a tour of the Air and Space Museum, a workshop on e-book design, a presentation on memory (okay, I’ll be running that one), a mass signing, and more brilliant authors than you can count!

Now, to be fair, part of the problem with counting all those authors may be due to their tendency to not cluster in any one place for too long that isn’t a bar, or just as likely a problem with your ability to count because you’ve followed them to the bar and as part of your disguise you’ve been drinking.

While attendance at the various panels, programs, and workshops does require a membership, anyone can come to the mass autograph session on Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City.

There will also be a “Book Depot” where you can pick up copies of books by many of the authors who will be present. That will run Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and again from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – Noon. I’ve made arrangements for the Book Depot to have some of my titles, as well as copies of books published by Paper Golem.

Hope to see you there!

York in June: SF Saturday!

Sci-Fi Saturday

On June 16th, a little over a month from now, my wife and I will be heading out to the wilds of York, PA, where I will be participating in the glory that is known far and wide as Sci-Fi Saturday (clicking the graphic to the right will take you to the Facebook Event page where all the up-to-the-minute info can be found).

The event takes place at the York Emporium, a huge bookstore located at 343 W. Market Street in York, PA. I’ll have a table there, and though there’ll be just the one of me I’ll be there wearing three different hats: As an author, I’ll have copies of my own fiction for sale and signing. As a publisher, I’ll have copies of all the Paper Golem titles. And as the Director of the Klingon Language Institute, I’ll have a nice assortment of both KLI books, and Klingon language materials from Pocket Books and elsewhere (including foreign language translations of The Klingon Dictionary).

In addition to my wife Valerie at my table, I’ll be joined by famed children’s book author and recent fantasy novelist Alethea Kontis, who is always a lot of fun to be around (and not just because she’s a princess).

At some point in the festivities, I’m told I’ll be on stage, yammering on and on about Klingon, language in general, and my own fiction. The schedule is still coming together, but when I know the time be assured I’ll share it with you.

Three Things Make A Post (Because I’m Not Sleeping)

I’ve recorded the last two episodes of DaHjaj Hol, the daily Klingon podcast that I’ve been doing since January 1st. They’ll go out into the world at dawn today and tomorrow.

It’s been an interesting experience, creating a snippet of Klingon every day for a year. I have no idea how large an audience I reached, or if they’ll continue to be used as a resource by people interested in the language (the entire series will remain available via this website).

For 2012 I think I’ll continue to post a Klingon podcast, but the format is likely to change to only once a week, and the content will probably be aimed more at an intermediate level. But nothing’s definite yet, it’s all in flux.

In other news, since I’m awake, I started thinking about conventions, and realized that I hadn’t yet booked my hotel for my first event of 2012. Happily, the fine folks at Lunacon made that very easy with their website links, and I’m now all set.

If you’re not acquainted with this convention, I would encourage you to check it out (and not just because I was their GoH last year). It’s an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable convention, the programming is always entertaining, the hotel grounds are gorgeous, and I always have a wonderful time.

I’m particularly glad to be heading back this year because the artist GoH is none other than Howard Tayler, the multi-Hugo nominated creator of Schlock Mercenary and one quarter of the podcast Writing Excuses. I love Howard like a brother, and I never get to see him enough (not that I expect to manage much time with him at Lunacon, as he’ll be busy doing that whole GoH thing).

This year it looks like there will be several other Hadley Rille authors present, and we’re trying to coax the programming team to give us a slot. No guarantees, but I’m hopeful. In any case, I hope to see you at Lunacon; it’s great fun!

My wife and I have no major plans for New Year’s Eve (in case you were wondering), other than a quiet night here at home. I generally avoid traveling on the last night of the year; in my experience there are just too many people on the road with a bit too much alcohol in their systems. Thanks, but we hit our drama quotient for the year and are not looking for any last minute additions.

If your own plans take you out and about, please keep yourselves safe. If you do feel the need/desire to imbibe, designate a driver for your group and treat this person well.

A lot of folk like to make various resolutions for the new year, things they’ll try to do better in the coming months, but I’ve never understood the appeal. As that little green guy said, “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” That said, I have quite a bit that I intend to do in 2012. I could tell you about it now, but this post has already run on too long, and besides, why spoil the surprises?

Anyway… it’s now 4am. I think maybe I’ll try and grab another hour or two of sleep. Wish me luck!

SFWA NY Reception 2011

The good news is that Valerie is recovering nicely from her surgery, is more or less free from post-surgical pain, and has gotten over most of the annoying symptoms related to going off more than two weeks of high grade narcotics that kept the pain at bay. Yay, Valerie!

The bad news is that her stamina is still poor, and she’s simply not up to a 2+ hour car ride (each way), hanging around NYC for a couple hours before the reception, and then 3 or 4 hours of the reception itself. So, I’ll be there alone this year, which sucks, but better than not going at all.

And once again, I’m beset with the same issue that always hits me for this event: where in NJ should I park. In past years I’ve parked near various NJT stations and taken the train over. The last couple years I’ve parked at a lot in Hoboken and taken the Path over. I haven’t been particularly happy with the parking near the Path train, so I’m not sure what I’m doing this time out.

Anyone with brilliant ideas, feel free to chime in and let me know.

The current plan is for me to leave Philadelphia about 2pm (which is when I get off work). That should put me in Hoboken between 4:00 and 4:30, and so I could conceivably be in NYC by 5pm. Not a clue what I’ll do for two hours before things kick off at Planet Hollywood, so I’m open to suggestions there too.

In any case, if you’re going to be at the shindig, I hope you’ll stop by and say “howdy.”

Capclave 2011 Schedule

The folks who run Capclave are bucking the trend. Instead of waiting until the last days or week before their convention, participants received their programming schedule a couple days ago . I had to work out a couple potential kinks in mine or I’d have shared it with you sooner, but here it is, in all its glory:

Friday, October 14th:
5:00 – 6:00 “Holy Shuftik!” He Cried

Saturday, October 15th
12:00 – 1:00 Author Table
4:30 – 5:00 Reading

Sunday, August 16th
11:00 – 12:00 So You Want to Put Together an Anthology?
2:00 – 3:00 The Genre Food Panel

Somewhere in there, I’m intending to do something by way of launching the newest anthology from Paper Golem, Cucurbital 2, possibly at my Author Table on Saturday, or maybe as part of a room party Friday or Saturday evening. If all else fails, I’ll have copies available at the mass signing on Saturday night.

Of course Barry will be there with me, and he wants nothing more in this life than to have his picture taken with you (you know who you are).

See you at the convention!

This seems like as good a time as any to lock in for public viewing what my convention-going schedule is for the rest of the calendar year.

Massive Book Signing – Nebula Awards Weekend 2011

The annual Nebula Awards Weekend is coming up, and I’ll be in attendance. This year (and next) it’s being held in Washington, D.C., a not uncomfortable car trip for me. That’s especially convenient because it means I can load the trunk up with books I want to get signed.

That’s right, I said “signed.” If you’re in the area, you might be interested in attending the Massive Book Signing that’s scheduled for Friday, May 20th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Attendance at the conference is not required, and there will be quite a few authors present to sign copies of your books, whether you bring them with you from home or buy them on site.

Here’s the list of authors scheduled to be there, and I suspect more will be added to the list:

John Joseph Adams, Christopher Barzak, J. Kathleen Cheney, Aliette de Bodard, Tom Doyle, Scott Edelman, Timons Esaias, Cynthia Felice, Andrew Fox, Kerry Frey, Laura Anne Gilman, Anne Groell, Joe Haldeman, Peter Heck, Vylar Kaftan, JohnKessel, Alethea Kontis, Mary Robinette Kowal, Geoffrey A.Landis, Allen Lewis, Tom Lewis, Lee Martindale, James Morrow, Catherine Petrini, Stanley Schmidt, Lawrence Schoen, Lansing Sexton, Bud Sparhawk, Allen Steele, Eric James Stone, Michael Sullivan, Robin Sullivan, Michael Swanwick, Brandie Tarvin, Mary Turzillo, Michael Whelan, Alexander Whitaker, Connie Willis

In particular, I want to point out J. Kathleen Cheney and Eric James Stone because along with other things I’ll have in the trunk of my car, I’m bringing assorted books published by Paper Golem, such as Alembical 2, which includes Cheney’s Nebula nominated novella “Irons Shoes,” and Stone’s brand new (and not “officially yet released”) collection Rejiggering The Thingamajig And Other Stories, which includes his Nebula and Hugo nominated short story “That Leviathan, Which Thou Hast Made.” These will be available for purchase during the signing. Also available will be my new novel, Buffalito Contingency, which also isn’t “officially” out either.

So come on down, join SFWA as we celebrate our own, and get some books signed (and, ahem, buy a few new ones too). And be sure to stop by and say “hi” to me.
